Cipro is useful for treating a wide range of bacterial infections. The drug classification for Ciprofloxacin is quinolone antibiotic. It stops the growth of bacteria. This is the only use for the medication and it will not work to stop a viral infection such as the flu or a cold. If a patient is prescribed this antibiotic too often it will lose its effectiveness. The medication can be taken either with food or without. It is usually taken two times a day; once in the morning and once in the evening or as prescribed by a physician.
Taking Cipro with some other products may cause it to bind with them and be ineffective. If the doctor prescribes the medication for a bacterial infection talk to the pharmacists about other products that you may be taking such as supplements. Quinapril, vitamins, and products containing iron or zinc can render the medication ineffective.
Various foods can also inhibit the effectiveness of this medication. It is best to take the dosage 2 hours before or 6 hours after consuming foods that are rich in calcium like milk or yogurt. However, if these types of foods are eaten with a whole meal that contains other non-calcium loaded foods it will not have the adverse effect and it should be okay to take the medicine along with an entire meal. Be sure to discuss any types of supplements or vitamins that you are taking as they can also inhibit the medication from working properly.
Cipro, as well as other antibiotics, works best when the medication is kept at a constant level in the blood stream. It is important to take it at the same times every day and to not miss a dose. For the medication to work properly the entire prescription must be taken until it is gone.
