Prevacid, which is generically prescribed as lansoprazole, is commonly used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and stomach conditions which create too much stomach acids such as Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.

Prevacid is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a history of a previous sensitivity to lansoprazole, liver disease, or if the patient is less than a year old, the patient may not be able to take Prevacid or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with Prevacid, depending on the condition or the severity of the condition.

The American Food and Drug Administration rated this medication as a pregnancy risk category B. Prevacid is not expected to cause harm or birth defects in unborn babies. It has yet to be determined whether or not this medication passes through the mother’s breast milk and affects a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to a nursing woman and should thoroughly discuss whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks before prescribing Prevacid to a pregnant woman.

There is a risk of side effects associated with Prevacid, some of which are severe. A patient suffering from a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms which include facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require emergency medical attention include symptoms such as uncontrollable diarrhea and excessive vomiting.

Other less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms which include headaches, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or stomach pain. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a tolerable level by reducing the dosage of Prevacid.

Prevacid should be taken as it has been prescribed by the physician. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped to avoid the potential for an overdose. The patient should never take a double dose of this medication. If an overdose is suspected, the patient should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An overdose will present with symptoms which include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

There is a risk of negative drug interactions associated with Prevacid. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing this medication. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications and herbal remedies. Medications with known negative interactions with Prevacid include digoxin, ampicillin, theophylline, ketoconazole, iron supplements, and blood thinners. Patients who also take sucrafalte should take it at least thirty minutes after taking Prevacid. Some conditions require the addition of an antibiotic while taking Prevacid address the cause of the symptoms while Prevacid addresses the symptoms. Prevacid should be taken for a full cycle. Patients who terminate their drug therapy early risk returning symptoms and a worsening condition.
